Color correction post effect

Postby Rich_Art » Fri Mar 12, 2010 1:38 am

Hi Per,

I've a question.
I made an AR studio Light setup. I used Degamma for this.
The final image needed a bit color correction which I added in the picture viewer with the filter option.
After I was satisfied I clicked "add post effect" in the picture viewer so that I got a color correction post effect in the render settings.

Now when I render this out, I get a totally different outcome. See images.
The attached image shows the posteffect "color correction" added in the render settings(second image). The first image shows the image with no post effect in de render settings but instead I've added the color correction in the picture viewers filter option.
Both settings are the same. The only different here is the time the post effect is added. A:in the render settings, B:in the picture viewer.
In the render settings of Degamma I've turned of the "all videopost" but that does not has any effect on the outcome.

How can I make it work with the post effect only.(in the render settings) This because I want to share this setup for our members on my site.
If you need the file, just let me know....

Peace,
Rich_Art. ;)

I've had a look into this, it seems it's a limitation.

The Color Correction post effect evaluates before DeGamma can (or alternatively there's maybe some bug with the color correction post effect and it doesn't match it's settings in the PV), this means that you have the color correction applied to the "Linear" version of the image, then DeGamma brings it back into monitor colorspace rather than how it should be to recreate the effect i.e. color correction applied last of all.

Unfortunately changing the order of post effects or the application position of DeGamma has no effect on this. I can have a look into seeing if it's possible internally to make DeGamma apply itself earlier, but it may not be possible, the issue is typically you want DeGamma to apply after everything else so that everything executes within a linear color workflow. Color correction applied after via the PV filter is possibly the only exception because you can't edit that in linear space, and unfortunately it executes before everything else as a post effect.

The one thing you can do is just to copy paste your settings from the Color Corrector in PV and try to do the same in post, but i understand your frustration.
BTW the image A looks better than image B IMOP but is subjective as everything in ART.
Nice studio setup.
